President Douglas Macarthur in 1938?

What if during 1938 just a year before ww2 Douglas MacArthur ran for president to defeat the continued president FDR and mannaged to win. How would MacArthur deal with ww2when it starts?

You might want to run away now. Before Calbear gets here.:) President MacArthur ? the ultimate nightmare ! Oh well. At least you didn't bring the U.S.N.s Alaska Class Cruisers into this.

He would have had to run in 1936 or 1940, and its unlikely he would win. MacArthur was actually fairly unpopular in the 1930s due to his participation in the suppression of the Bonus Army. The fact that he got divorced in 1929 and was well known to keep a half-Filipino mistress probably wouldn't have gone over well with the electorate, either.

You'd need to change his career trajectory after his stint as Army CoS & subsequent appointment as Phillipines Army CoS. That last job was near and dear to his heart, & by some stories vastly ore lucrative to his family than the Presidency of the US.

So, if Mac is not appointed as PI Army CoS, and he gets around his personality flaws and tin ear for political discourse. Then maybe he can survive the nomination process. It will be difficult as he also has the public perception as the asshole who ran the honorable and patriotic Great War Veterans off the public streets of Washington DC.
