The Democratic list looks like a pretty good overview of potential candidates. However, it's pretty hard to imagine all of them running at once. I'm going to go with:
Wellstone
Graham
Sharpton
Gore
Biden
Kucinich

I would say there's room for another Midwestern moderate, but I'm leaving Gephardt and Daschle off, as chamber leaders have a lot more responsibility in the absence of a Democratic president. Leaving Larouche off because I'm leaving off all other joke candidates like the guy dressed as a chicken.

Reform doing better is an interesting way to go, but I still can't see McCain leaving the GOP to run Reform. He was nothing if not patient IOTL. And I also can't imagine Powell being upset enough with a Dole presidency to run, especially considering how he sat out '96- now IOTL.

What about the rest of the choices? like Giuliani?

While I don't think it's likely, I can see paths to that happening. A stronger Reform Party might talk with him. If stronger also means a more concrete vision that gels with Giuliani's politics, he could be directly recruited out of the GOP to run. I think it more likely he'd be recruited for VP at the time. No 9/11 at this point, remember. But a strong name to consider. Going to Reform on his own to compete for the nomination seems less likely, though. So if he's running for president it would have to be as the party's new hand-chosen golden boy.

Actually, I'm starting to think Bradley's a more likely candidate than Wellstone and that Bradley will keep both Wellstone and Dean from running.

Why drop Vice President Kemp for a (seen at the time) mediocre Mayor?

I'd agree with this. But he'd have a Gore primary fight still, although this time on more even ground.

The Democratic primaries are super Senator heavy, may see Governors like John Kitzhaber, Paul Patton, Evan Bayh, Mel Carnahan and Jim Hunt hop in or consider it at least.

On Giuliani, as Himmler says, I meant the Reform Party. He's got cross-party appeal and looks like a maverick (before that word was irrevocably tainted.) May not be America's Mayor, but he's still got crime stats in his favor, an open attitude on social issues, and the full backing of the financial sector.

I was hoping you might weigh in on some non-Senate candidates.
Bayh's a hot prospect; the moderate Midwesterner (sort-of) we were waiting for.
I don't think Kitzhaber has what it takes to run a national insurgency campaign from the left.
Carnahan *could* enter a crowded field, or he could stay to run the best-funded senate race in Missouri history.
Patton has little to run on in 2000. He's the "good government" guy (boooring) and his education reforms are in the pipe but not yet showing great results. If Hunt joins the race, he's got no leg to stand on.
Hunt does better as the education candidate, but again, it's hard to see him handling a national campaign after more than 30 years in Raleigh.
