President Dickinson

Two WIs here, obviously not taking place in the same timeline:

1. What if Daniel S. Dickinson had been nominated for Vice President in the 1864 election? I heard that he had been considered as Lincoln's running mate, but was passed over for Johnson. What would Dickinson do differently from Johnson during his term as VP? If Lincoln is still assassinated, how does he handle Reconstruction? Would this butterfly away his death in April 1866?

2. What if Daniel S. Dickinson had been the compromise candidate for the Democrats Presidential ticket in 1860? How would he have done against Lincoln? If he had been elected, would this prevent secession? If it did, what would happen?

He was on the more conservative wing of the Democratic party, so his general outlook is probably not too different from Andrew Johnson's. However, as a New Yorker he is probably more in touch with nothern opinion than Johnson was, and if his NYT obit can be believed, was a much more genial personality, not given to making enemies the way Johnson did.

Regarding the cause of death, the NYT refers to "a severe attack of hernia". If being President makes any diiference, I shiould guess it accelerates his death rather than delaying it, given what a stormy and stressful time this was.

There is a remote chance that he carries NY and throws the election into Congress. Far more likely to be no change, though
