That's not quite true. It is said that he had rather nice hair.

Eh, he was a fair tactician by Civil War standards. He was, however, a self-righteous pompous jackass who alienated everyone he was theoretically supposed to be commanding. That's where his failure as a commander lies, as that's not how military command should work......moreso when you're in command of one of the most vital strategic theaters against the best generals the other side has.

That defect greatly outweighed whatever tatical skilss he had.
