President Crawford

In 1816 William Crawford was offered the Democratic-Republican nomination. He refused in favor of James Monroe, believing the 20s to be his time in the sun. Of course Monroe went on to serve two terms, and when Crawfords chance in 1824 came, a paralyzing stroke left him a deadweight in the political circus that developed out of the election.

What if he had accepted the 1816 nomination? Obviously he would have defeated Rufus King in 1816, but how would a Crawford presidency have differed from Monroe's?

Crawford's cabinet choices are probably a tad different, as he's from Georgia. But overall I don't see a huge difference in his policies and that of Monroe's in OTL.

Where this gets really interesting is in perhaps avoiding the corrupt bargain of 1824. Say Monroe decides to make his own bid for the presidency in 1824 and successfully manages to win the Democratic Republican Caucus in 1824. Jackson, Adams, and Clay all run but are defeated due to Monroe's popularity in the South and East. Adam's and Clay's forces probably eventually merge to form the Whig party.

Monroe governs from 1825-1831 when he dies of a heart attack forcing his VP to take over (Maybe Jackson?).
