President Cheney?

I suppose this is still possible but what if Dick Cheney was fit and
was running for president in 2008? Let's also assume he defeated
John McCain in the Republican primaries and was poised to match
up in November against either Clinton or Obama.

Imagine the nasty campaign against either of the Democrats. Would
he win and be sworn in as President in 2009?

Unless you significantly alter the course of the last 8 years, Dick Cheney could never become President.

Most Americans would vote for Lon Cheney over Dick Cheney.

The short answer to your question Adam is no. It's not even remotely possible. Even if President Bush were dead and Cheney were the incumbant POTUS, there's just too much that would need to be undone for him to be a viable presidential candidate this election cycle.

He might have a shot at the Republican nomination and then the election if he ran for it in 2000.

Yes, 8 years ago he quite possibly could have mounted a successful run for the presidency. I do not recall why he did not.

I suspect that Cheney would be seeking the Republican nomination had GW Bush died between noon Janaury 2007 say August of that year.

He might consider it and perhaps float the idea, but he'd be talked out of it rather quickly I imagine. Too many health and political negatives for him to be a viable candidate unless he were a stellar President right off the bat w/a popularity rating (which I can't see happening).

As I recall Cheney was more of a technocrat than a politician, which would make it difficult to mount a successful for President. He might be popular with the party elite, but to the masses he would have zero name recognition.

Cheney reminds me of Merlin in the film Excaliber about the Arthurian Legend.

He has that same otherworldly, slightly reptilian form which would not be popular with the voters as Gordon Brown will find out soon.
