President Charlton Heston

In 1969 Charlton Heston was asked by some Democrats to run for the California State Senate, a move that would have likely had bipartisan support in the state. He declined because he wanted to continue acting.

So WI he decides to run for the State Senate and wins? I assume he would run for Governor next in 1974. What next?

It depends on whether or not his political positions evolve as they did in real life. As far as I can see it, he faces a few major challenges:

First, his strong religious viewpoints. California has much the same attitude as England when it comes to politicians being religious: Fine, but it's embarrassing if you talk about it too much.

Second, the gun issue: Not as much of a problem as the religious one, as there are plenty of rural communities and conservative districts (Orange and San Diego Counties) with a strong history of 2nd amendment support. However, urban areas such as Los Angeles would have an issue with this, and he'd be dead in the water in the Bay Area.

Third, the actor thing: After Reagan, it took us a couple of decades to get over the "Holy crap, we elected an actor?" thing. Schwarzenegger took advantage of a bad situation and a financial crisis to get elected.

Well, he did get into Northwestern. A school not known for granting addmission to morons. Whenever I heard in a one on eone interview situation he came across as very articulate and polished while still having a "common" touch. Not something that can be easily faked. One of his favorite topics washis grandson who IIRC suffers from some devlepoment issues

Oh, Heston's intelligence wouldn't be an issue at all. The man was well-versed in a wide range of subjects, acting being only one of them.

At the time, he was mostly known as a civil rights activist who had marched with King. The gun issue mostly came up during the passage of the Brady Bill, though I'm sure that he was a strong 2nd amendment advocate before then.

I think this is a potential great timeline in the making, without out the need for major butterflies untill perhaps Heston can secure the governership. I think he should line up for the Presidency for 1988 election and should be able to beat Bush.

Heston reacted to the crazy stupidity of the Brady bunch. Gun control was always stupid and they took to a whole higher level of dumb.

Would have been interesting but he never really had the fire in the belly for something like that. You have to really want it to go after and get it.

No, but the fact that he was a crazy gun nut would.

Sitting on the fence chaps?

In terms of the cool-o-meter if you're going for an actor President Heston beats Reagen hands down, have them at it 1-on-1 in 1976/80? :D

Well if you keep gun control off the radar mostly until he gets into office as a Democrat you could see some very interesting political fallout. A Democratic dominated Congress tries to pass some gun control law and the President makes a public announcement: "Not from my cold dead hands!" I don't care were you stand on gun control that would be fucking cool! Plus half the country would just shit themselves :D
