In our timeline, Champ Clark was favored to get the nomination in 1912. But however, Woodrow Wilson ended up winning the nomination after between ten and twenty ballots. If Clark had ended up winning the nomination, could he have beaten Taft? What was Clark's politics, as compared to Wilson? How would he have handled World War I, the Mexican crisis, and would he have segegerated the Federal government like Wilson did? Who would be his Running Mate?
Clark had promised the Secretary of State's position to Congressman James Michael Curley at the 1912 convention. The idea of an Anglophobic, brilliant, articulate Irish Catholic machine politician running America's foriegn policy in that era is interesting. He had a progressive record in Congress when Wilson was still a Cleveland Democrat.
