Birch E. Bayh Jr., who defeated Former California Governor Ronald Reagan in the 1976 Presidential election and served as the 38th President of the United States from 1977-1981, died earlier today. The President who signed sweeping Healthcare reform in late 1977 and signed Electoral Reform in 1978. Bayh also installed Solar Panels on the White House. Despite all this and other legislative reforms, thanks to an Energy Crisis triggered by the Iranian revolution, and double digit inflation, Bayh was narrowly defeated in 1980 by Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker. Bayh also is the only person since the Founding Fathers to draft more than one constitutional amendment and was a staunch advocate for the Equal Rights Amendment, which was eventually ratified (though significantly watered down by Conservatives) in 1983. So how do you think Bayh will be remembered by History? His standing seems to have risen since he left office in January 1981, but will that continue?
