President Al Smith 1932

Had his nomination been blocked in 1928 could Smith have been the nominee, and presubably President in 1932. I know he eventaully started disliking the new deal but might he have been drawn to such policies becasue the the depth of the crisis?

My guess is that he could well have been nominated in 1932, if he steared clear of 1928. I don't know off the top of my head who the 1928 democratic candidates were, but my impression was that there weren't many, because the republicans were reaping the benefits of prosperity.

I imagine in any case, Smith not getting the 28 nomination for the presidency pretty much butterflies FDR's election as Governer of New York and therefore his political roadmap to the Whitehouse. If Smith is the nominee in 1932 he'd win (there's no way a Dem loses in OTL circumstances). His victory would be narrower than FDR's OTL 32 mandate.

I see Smith implimenting some of the OTL New Deal, but nothing like what we saw withFDR in riality.

Not too sure what Smith does in terms of foreign polecy-I doubt he'd run again in 1940, but he'd still remain until the beginning of 1941. Not sure who Smith's successor would be.

Al Smith believed in the unwritten rule that no person should run for more than two terms as President.

I'm no expert on NY state-level politics in the late '20s, but one possible POD: FDR's victory in 1928 was extremely narrow. Had the Republican Albert Ottinger won, Smith maybe could have made a comeback to the NY governor's mansion in 1930, which would set him up nicely for a repeat bid in 1932.

Given his 1928 loss, there'd be some competition for the nomination, but it's not implausible he could win, and given the depth of the Depression, he'd beat Hoover, if by a smaller margin than FDR did.
