President Al Gore

WI Kennedy chose Al Gore, Sr. instead of LBJ as his running mate and is assassinated as OTL?

I see similar civil rights changes but less Vietnam.

You made a mistake in not adding "Sr." in your thread title. Obviously, everyone assumes that you're talking about the younger Al Gore, and since the topic of a president Al Gore Jr. has been debated to death, nobody pays attention to your thread.

This also keeps LBJ in Congress, which is interesting. Maybe more action on civil rights from the Congressional side, perhaps even starting in Kennedy's time in office?

The problem is that Gore was never on the shortlist, and he was seen as a traitor by the Dixiecrats, so the effect is moot. If Kennedy doesn't pick Johnson, Nixon wins Texas and with butterflies affecting the first debate, there's an 80% chance of a President Nixon in 1960.

Texas is not enough for Nixon to win, and butterflies could also mean that Nixon is worse in the debate, not better. Or that he gets pneumonia in Alaska and is stuck in a bed until November, or that Eisenhower stays home instead of giving him luckwarm support as he did late in the campaign IOTL, or anything you want it to be, it's not an actual argument.

Anyhow, Gore was IOTL against the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the Southern Manifesto, in favor of the 1965 Civil Rights Act, while having liberal positions on Vietnam by the late 1960s.

So I'd guess that a lukewarm civil rights effort through the 1960s, a solid reelection in 1964 against Goldwater or someone else, possibly less involvement in Vietnam, and chances are pretty good that Humphrey might be his running mate in 1964.
