After the Revolution of 1848, what would be the best way of preventing the Second Empire from rising?
Obviously, my first thought is get rid of Louis Napoleon somehow. Without him, the conservative old guard and Bonapartists will have a harder time finding a figure to rally around. Assuming the heirs of Louis Philippe act more or less as OTL, there wouldn't really be a clear figurehead for the right.
But that probably wouldn't be enough by itself. The Second Empire from its very inception seems to have had so many problems that it was inevitably doomed to collapse.
So what do you guys think? Was the whole project doomed from the start? And if so, how do we end up with a sort of "Third Republic" rather than a rapid transition back to Monarchy?
