Pre-WWI Belgian Breakup

Is there any chance of Belgium breaking up into Wallonia and Flanders at any time following the end of the Franco-Prussian War, yet before WWI?

Would it be possible for France to get Wallonia and the Dutch to get Flanders, or are the Germans/British going to get too pissed off? Also, is the 1839 Treaty of London much of a problem in terms of Belgian neutrality?

Britain will definitely be pissed off. I don't know Bismarck thinks that giving Wallonia for the loss of Alsace-Lorraine will make France less hostile.

The Dutch would definitelly like it. So would France.

I don't know. I don't think the Dutch realy cared about Flanders anymore. Annexing it would certainly shift the political balance in the Netherlands between Catholics and Protestants, which would be a reason for the protestant faction to oppose it (and for the catholic faction to support it). Besides that it removes a buffer area between the Netherlands and France. If France ever tried to go for the Rhine border again, it doesn't have to cross Belgium before it can enter the Netherlands.

In reaction to the original question. I don't think there realy was an option. The Flemish certainly were unhappy about Belgium, especialy the way they treated the Flemish and the Flemish language. The problem is that the Walloons and the Francophone population (including the Flemish upper class and a significant part of the Flemish middleclass) spoke French and generaly supported the Belgian state and basicly had all the money and power. So I don't think a Flemish revolt had any chance to succeed. I would say that the only way to split Belgium pre WW2 is outside influence.

Seems like a huge bonus for flanders to me. no ww1 destruction and potential better treatment in ww2 . No political crisis every few years and so on.

Walloons get run over hard in ww1/2 and have more trouble rebuildig.
Would be in either much better position or much worse (lack of flemish yearly transfers moneyflow either forces a major reformation or total shutdown).
And so on

Have Leopold follow through with his stupid scheme to conquer half of the Netherlands and then have the surrounding powers decide enough is enough.

I don't think a two-way partition is likely. Three-way seems more likely between Prussia, France, and Netherlands. Netherlands isn't tough enough to block France from Antwerp on its own methinks, unless the British decide the Dutch are to become a Belgian-style neutral state under British Protection.

Personaly I doubt that Belgium would be divided after such a war. The thing is, it is rather unusual for a country to be completely annexed. I find it more likely that only part of Belgium wouldgo to the Netherlands and France (like Belgian Limburg to the Netherlands and the areas France lost after the 100 days to France).
