As the agreement on putting the capital between Maryland and Virginia was part of a deal that would have the federal government taking on the debts of all the states (but mostly the Northern ones, which had done most of the fighting in the Revolution) there may be some trouble for New York economically for a bit. Heck, without that deal it would take longer for national banks, federal reserves, etc being set up. Shares in the First Bank of the United States were some of the first traded on Wall Street. Also, I think the Irish and others might be put somewhere else here. Just a feeling. If NY had remained US capital and still developed into the largest and most economically powerful city in the country what kind of city would we be looking at?
It'd serve more of a London role for the country I imagine as it'd be the largest city and also the capital of country.
