What if Walter Mondale had been elected in 1984? What wouldhe do as President What would be the ffects?
First let's start with how Mondale wins. First PoD is Carter doesn't appoint Volcker and the Fed doesn't tackle inflation like IOTL. Due to there still being malaise and crisis Carter loses in 1980 but him and the Democrats do about 1.5% better swinging a few, probably unimportant, congressional races. Reagan still passes tax cuts and survives assassination but the stagflation continues, though it stops about 1985 and there is a sluggish recovery. This mwabs Reagan's popularity is much lower and Mondale has a fighting chance. Of course being Walter Mondale he'd screw that up. The primaries go similar to IOTL in that Mondale wins and Hart is secons though there might be some other candidates and different results. So at the convention Mondale picks Hart instead of Ferraro, a pick that avoids her distractions and lessens Mondale's weaknesses. Hart also persiades him not to promise a tax increase. Then the contest is close, with Reagan unpopular but Mondale distrusted. However in the debates Reagan stuffs up, coming off as senile in the second debate as in the first. The race is close but Mondale gains momentum and Reagan is dogged by health questions. Ultimately Mondale wins a close election. Is that enough to get him to win or is even more needed?
How would a Mondale presidency go and would America be more leftwing? What if?
