POTUS Lewis Cass in 1848

Let's say Martin Van Buren doesn't run or isn't nominated as the Free Soil Party's candidate in 1848. Without him, New York would most likely have gone to Democratic nominee Lewis Cass, and with it, the election.

So instead of Zachary Taylor, we have a president in the White House who is militaristic, supports the filibusterers in Central and South America, favors popular sovereignty on the slavery question, took a hard line with regards to secession, and is for the annexation of Texas...basically Stephen Douglas beta.

Butterflies anyone?

I don't know enough about Lewis Cass to comment but I would say that it would certainly make things much more chaotic. Certainly the Oregon problem will be handled diffferently. This is definitly interesting and I would love to see what people write about it.

FYI I love Tailgunner. keept writing it:)

The Oregon question had already been settled by Polk in the previous administration.

With Cass is there even a need for a compromise of 1850 if he is for popular sovereignty. How would he handle a bleeding Kansas? Would he let the two sides duke it out, or would he intervene to stop the violence?

The Gadsden purchase is coming up 1853. Would Cass put this up a couple of years? Would he build railroads in the North and South?

Would he be re-elected in 1852?
