Potential candidates for the first Emperor of Mexico.

Lets say that for whatever reason, the Spanish government accepts the Treaty of Cordóba in 1821 and recognized Mexico as an independent state.

Lets also assume that Ferdinand VII does not accept the throne for himself, but rather places a relative on the throne. There were several possible candidates, including both Infante Carlos (a terrible choice IMO considering his extremely reactionary political stance) and Infante Francisco. Several other European princes were also approached by the Mexican authorities.

My main question is this: Who would be the ideal candidate for the Mexican throne in order to steer it towards a stable constitutional monarchy and make it an attractive place for immigrants from Catholic Europe?

p.s. This is my first post, so go easy on me :D

My personal favorite is a guy who's candidacy is often forgotten (and probably borders on ASB) - Archduke Karl of Teschen.

The guy's a military hero, he's filthy rich and he's connected to the Austrian, Dutch, British and Spanish royal families through himself and his wife (just not sure how Mexico would take to a Protestant first empress, though).

Le roi de Rome! L'aiglon!

that is Napoleon II, a child in 1821, but a catholic and surely a liberal.

I like the idea of Karl, duke of Teschen getting the crown, even if it is far-fetched. If Karl were to become Emperor he could probably keep the country militarily secure, but would he be able to convince the liberals and conservatives to work together in government?

Didn't know about the idea of putting Charles of Teschen on the Mexican throne :) It seems great. And why far-fetched? If they put Maximilian they can put Charles, it's not that crazy. He would be a good leader, and Mexico would definitely do better than OTL in 19th century. Far-fetched would be making a lawyer's son from southern France a King of Sweden and somehow that sounds familiar

Plus, the Mexican climate might be better for Henriette's health, Karl's wealth can perhaps be used to develop the country, thus attracting other investors in Mexico, and best of all his kids are still young enough that they can adopt Mexican rather than Austrian/Spanish/imperialistic ideals.
