I'm a Yankee, but I do understand Mary Whitehouse and her Anglo-Christian moral crusades for moral purity, and Enoch Powell and his exploitation of fears and bigotries of non-Whites and anti-immigrant sentiment, and the Thatcher years and the Conservatism of that government and those times and the controversial actions it took, and that the British did have (I'm unsure if they still do) things like Blasphemy laws. And I do understand something common to British fiction coming out of that 1980s era was the fear of a right-wing British where Thatcherism went on and on and evolved to greater right-wing heights. This is in things like "V for Vendetta".

There does seem like there were possibilities there for Britain to become right-wing (or at least more so than it ever ended up being), and there certainly seems like there were suspicions among the population that it may have happened in that post-War era. So the subject becomes, just how right-wing can post-War Britain become?
