I"m working for a setting for stories, books, films, rpgs, and all sorts of things that starts in the 19th century.
Gregor Mendel and Charles Darwin have a get together, exchange ideas, and fuse their two theories: Natural Selection and Genetics are put together in a synthesis 72 years before they were in our time line.
Two consecutive world wars have just been waged, bringing about previouslty unimaginable atrocities and the fear that human nature may itself be corrupt. This had existed to a degree in many religions, but now it was being brought to the forefront. Genetics is getting to the point where it will soon be possible to redesign humanity. A movement emerges that seeks to get rid of the "sinful" elements of human nature. This movement gains an environmentalist tinge in the 60s. Not all throughout though, but enough to have a serious effect. It sets itself up in the more war torn parts of the Earth - those that have seen the brutality of man towards his kin more than anyone else. They gain much favor in those parts, and with the aid of a cabal of geneticists and businessmen gain great political and economic power. By 1985 these countries fuse into the third great super power: The Progenitor Coalescance, also calleed the Coalescence, the PC, or the Progens. The U.S. brings the ideals of Democracy and Capitalism to the world. The Soviet Union brings Totalitarianism and Communism. The PC is is made up of the New Humanity, beings to whom the mere concept of things like killing are unthinkable, and the Protecters, Humans who have been brought up to serve the New Humanity, and protect them. After all, sinless beings like them would if threatened not be inclined to defend themselves. The Protectors are taught to live and if necessary die for the New Humanity, that they may one day become one of them. But they also know better than to obey their charges 100%. So they work together, and in cases of conflict of interests, look to their Charter, which either I or someone else will develop, to resolve the issue. By the time the other Nations acted, the PC had gained such a foot hold that it was close to impossible to defeat them. But in 1992 as the PC closed in, an alliance of the remaining Free Peoples escpaped into space, to a hellish planet named Tartarus, on which they would be hardened, their thirst for revenge sharpened, and from which they would grow. Their return is something the PC has been preparing for for a long time. 1000 years after the PC claimed Earth, the Human Remnant strikes back. It will be an apocalyptic war, and only one can win
