Post-ARW- US Army with Ranger units

So, WI after 1783, the new US Army decided to retain special lt inf units along the lines of Rogers' Rangers et al ?

Retaining a group of small elite corps to form the core a standing army would be interesting. This may be what Winfield Scott had hoped for in the 1830s. One problem I see are the Jacksonian belief that civilian/state militias should be the base of national defense, if I am recalling the era correctly.

Undoubtedly, these Ranger units would be used on the frontier against indians and will be torn in two by secession. The ACW and period after is when I could see the units be either amalgamated or disbanded. The long years of peace do take their toll.

What about the "Legion of the United States" Anthony Wayne led into the Old Northwest in the early 1790s?

It was a "combined arms" force which went through actual basic training at a facility built for that express purpose.

Maintaining elite military units during peacetime is quite expensive. If Washington paid for it, the next election would go to whoever platformed on lower taxes next term.
