Post-1368 Mongol PODs?

A rump remnant of the Mongol Empire composed of Buryatia, Inner Mongolia, Mongolia proper and even western Liaoning, if that's possible.

This is way over at the Post-1900s range but I always liked to see Ungern-Sternberg's Mongolia survive, maybe thrive. A nigh-impossible task so long as the Soviet Union is around but a White Russian Civil War victory leaving a fragmented, warlord-infested Russia (as was China) might put Mongolia in a better position.

Wouldn't a lot of that just be the Yuan dynasty after they retreated from China? But I'd love to see a Mongolia or Mongolian power which could exert power from Inner Mongolia to the Arctic Ocean. There's lots of good land there, after all.

Mandukhai Khatun is always a fun figure.

And I've always enjoyed the thought of a "Second Yuan" if the Mongols conquered the Ming a la the Manchus...

How come Timur didn't formally reestablish the khanate, instead of creating his own empire derived from Mongol legitimacy?

What if a Timur-like Mongol descendent appeared in a different region?

Because he was not decended from Ghengis and could never claim the title of Khan for himself. Instead he set himself up as the nominal protector of Ghengis' line which allowed him the same authority without the limitations of the actual Khan's position. It also gave him political freedom in that he could choose Mongol, Persian, or Muslim ideas and politics as best suited him. By only invoking the Khanate instead of recreating it he could do as he pleased with fewer legal and cultural restrictions.
