Possible Wars

After reading the Spanish-Moroccan war TL, I was wondering what other similar border incidents could have escalated into full scale war. I know there are many outstanding border disputes, driven by nationalism. So, assuming some nations got an infusion of nationalism, what wars could break out over territorial disputes? Wikipedia list a million such disputes, so I decide to ask the board.

It might be ASB, but a war between the Mongal and Roman Empires would be epic.:cool:

Anyway, I'm just thinking of a few ideas here. Maybe you could have a TL were Britian isn't the major empire, Germany and France also have sizable empires equal to them. They each have land on all continents, and this results in land wars. Ex. A war over Australia.

If you want something realistic, Pakistan and India have a had a tiny problem with each other for awhile now. They could go to war at any time in the 20th century.

Or maybe India stays united, and it's a civil war between Hindus and Muslims.

Read They Call it Civilization!, linked to in my signature, to see what would have happened if a particularly dangerous border incident had escalated.

It's a shameful plug, but at least it's relevant.

Australia and Indonesia over East Timor in 1999, or perhaps if it turns out Indonesian government officials were involved in the Bali bombings.

There could have been a war over the Beagle Channel between Argentina and Chile (in 1979 I think, maverick wrote a great TL about it but I can't remember the name).

This would also butterfly the Falklands War, which would probably mean that Argentina remains a close friend of the UK's.

.

Fuego en el Magallanes: the war takes place from December 11th of 1978 to January of 1979, although IOTL, the war would have taken place on December 22nd

There's also the possibility of an Argentine-Chilean war in 1902 and 1965

Of course, the possibility of an Argentinean civil war I explored in my TL "La Larga y Oscura Noche"

And let's not forget March 2008 conflict between Colombia and Venezuela-Ecuador...

And yes, there's that "Hell on earth" TL about a nuclear Indo-Pakistani war in 1999...

Rwanda and Congo in 1995 over Hutu militias

After 1994, that would have gotten a big international intervention very fast.

Second Korean war in 1994

That coulda been shocking and problematic at the same time, as Korea's famished, hardly in control military tried to fight with the South.

USA v Rwanda in 1994

Shoulda happened. Rwanda was a horrible event that the wealthy countries, who yanked their people out and left the place to burn, should be perpetually ashamed of. It would taken a few weeks and one US carrier to sort that mess out, and that woulda been the end of it. May have saved a million lives, too......

Britain v Eire in 1969 over the IRA

The Republic of Ireland never really cared for the IRA, and Britain was more focused on trying to keep the IRA and UVF from exploding into open violence. The problem was compounded by the RUC, which didn't give a f*** about the Catholics of Northern Ireland and did little to help them from the UVF. If Britain was to go as big as possible, it would be deploying the Army there to not just keep the UVF and IRA apart, but also either dismantle or take over form the RUC.
