"The Sarah Palin email hack occurred on September 16, 2008, during the 2008 United States presidential election campaign when the Yahoo! personal email account of vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin was subjected to unauthorized access. The hacker, David Kernell, had obtained access to Palin's account by looking up biographical details such as her high school and birthdate and using Yahoo!'s account recovery for forgotten passwords. Kernell then posted several pages of Palin's email on 4chan's /b/ board. Kernell, who at the time of the offense was a 20-year-old college student, was the son of longtime Democratic state representative Mike Kernell of Memphis."

So what are some possible PODs that could result from this? Could this hacking have led to an international crisis if the person in question had acted more maliciously?

Well, ANYTHING can lead to an international crisis if you toss enough maliciousness into the scenario. Nancy Reagan's cancer surgery could have led to severe tensions with Russia, if Ronnie had falsely accused the Communists of poisoning her with radiation. Just for example.

Is there something specific you're envisioning that Kernell could have done to really send things all to hell? The wiki article is short on specifics about what was in the e-mails, so I'm not sure what sort of material Kernell had to work with.

Maybe if his dad had been someone higher-rated than a state representative, like maybe a DC Senator, and tried to use his influence to get the FBI investigation quashed, and then there's questions about how close this cover-up got to Obama, it could spiral from there and impact the outcome of the election.

For an international angle, well, the hacks were apparently posted to 4Chan, so maybe they could really get some circulation among fans of Japanese p**n?

I was thinking something along the lines of sending vulgar emails to world leaders, or leaking emails with national security details (assuming there are any).
