Portugal and Brazil stay united

I know the idea is a very unlikely one but stay with me. Lets say cooler heads prevail in the Cortes that meet after the 1820 liberal revolution and they don't try to demote Brazil to a colony again or John VI unilaterally tells them no. How long would the United Kingdom of Portugal and Brazil last? Where would the king rule from and who would rule the kingdom that he is absent from? Perhaps the Monarch rules in Portugal and the heir rules Brazil?

There was a thread with a similar theme a few weeks ago in which all the questions you pose have been approached to some degree.

It would be possible to retain this status but it would mean that in time Brazil would inevitably become a dominant factor in this state. Hell, it would be only state that directly dominates one part of Europe. Maybe some sort of compromise like rotating capitol cities every decade between Lisbon and Brasillia. If anything, the key to this question is in not pissing of Brazil in any way for centuries to come, which means some ultra boot licking by the Portugese.

Rio de Janeiro was Brazil's capital at the time. I was thinking of somwthing along the lines of a member of the royal Family ruling either Portugal or Brazil as regent (depending in where the King resides).

The problem is that no matter how you look at it Brazil will become the major force very quickly and from there it will only grow - especially during the rubber boom in the mid-to-late 1800s.Portugal will stagnate most likely as it did in OTL.

If the Union is Portugese headed, Brazil will realize the potential it has if it goes its own way and will likely do so. The Union might last longer if Brazil is at the top, ultimately this will piss off everyone in Portugal, and a revolution against the "Brazilian monarchy" would be a real possibility at some point.

What I like most of Portugal breaking away from the Empire, is that Brazil would likely get to keep the Portugese Colonies in Africa, and South East Asia. Always cool to have an South American Imperial power of the kind.

Well you could always have Portugal remain occupied for a number of years and later reclaimed, this would force the Portuguese monarchy to stay in Rio de Janeiro and perhaps enact some reforms.

Or perhaps they could go the South African route and have three capital cities, each housing a branch of governance, so you could have the Executive/Emperor in Rio de Janeiro, the Parliament in Lisbon and the Judiciary in Faro*.

*I don't know why people seem to not realize that Portugal was officially called the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves at the time and before and after was officially known as the Kingdom of Portugal and the Algarves, with the Algarves having been a sub-Kingdom (even if it was uflly itnegrated) within Portugal throughout its history.
