Populists as main party?

This might be a bit of a stretch, but I was wondering if there was any way the People's (Populist) Party might gain enough support to have a Congressional majority and/or President (James B. Weaver?). Perhaps by replacing the Democrats, as the US seems to favor a two-party system.

With their vaguely Socialist tendencies and distrust of European institutions, where would a Populist government stand in the tumultuous years ahead (Collision with Spain, WWI, Russian Revolution, colonial troubles, etc.)?

Populism has an inherent quality of anti-intellectualism. That does NOT mean populism=anti-intellectualism, but it's always a tendency and ripe for demagoguery and that needs to be moderated to achieve stability. I think it would be isolationist. Not wanting to spend time/blood/money on foreigners. I don't know if it would be nativist, it might be, I can see laws allowing only say, doctors or scientists or whatnot to immigrate but not laborers. On the other hand, we'd probably get a lot more positive (as in proactive) social and economic distribution laws.
