Popes becomes Saints as Vatican policy

Would a policy of automatically making former Popes saints as official part of Vatican policy affect the world?

Depends on whether it's retroactive, and when it's implemented. Making Rodrigo Borgia a saint is a good way of destroying the credibility of the Church.

EDIT: Ninja'd!

And don't forgot these many popes on 10th century who get their office with corruption.

And Benedict IX...

Isn't sainting Popes part of unofficial papal policy? I mean most popes from the past century have either been declared Saints or are in the process of becoming saints.

It would destroy one of 1) the authority of the papacy, 2) the authority of the Catholic church, or 3) the definition of the word 'saint'.

Very clearly, many of the mediaeval popes were far from holy. If the Papacy tries ramming this down the throat of the Church, he's probably going to fail. Even if he succeeds, the next pope will surely rescind it, and there goes 'papal infallibility'.

Personally, I suspect any pope who tried would be retired from office, likely by a quiet poisoning. Or, a new pope would be elected, which would lead to a schism.

If he successfully foists this rule on the church, and it's 'accepted', there will be a clear division in many peoples' minds between 'real' saints and 'nominal' saints, and once you open THAT can of worms, you'll get wild controversy as to who the 'real' ones are.

And the Protestant reformation comes earlier. Lollards and/or Hussites may survive, for instance.
