Pop Culture without the .50 Caliber Desert Eagle?

What if the .50 caliber version of the Desert Eagle had never been developed? What firearm would take its place in movies and popular culture? Would big frame revolvers continue to dominate, or would another powerful semi-automatic pistol take its place?

I think it's the caliber that really makes it, it's only partly the visual distinction from 'cowboy guns', and the nice lines of the DE itself. I'd guess Dirty Harry's gun would take it's place, maybe they make a .50 version by the Eighties, that will be the one.

If I may, if there were no Steyr Aug, what gun would the head sidekick of the bad-guys use?

Automag looks like the "meanest" alternative with the barrel rib and stylized grips, but you still need the massive, full-length slide with lightening holes, muzzle compensator, etc. of the Desert Eagle to complete the "mean" appearance.
