Pop Culture/Video Game WI: Star Sheep instead of Star Fox?

An interesting bit of trivia about Nintendo’s Star Fighter video game series:
In 1992, Nintendo and Argonaut Software collaborated to produce a 3D space shooter for the Super Nintendo, provisionally titled 'SnesGlider'.[1] The development team, led by Shigeru Miyamoto, redesigned what had been a tech demo into a rail shooter, with Nintendo designing the game and Argonaut handling the technical aspects.[2] However, without a story, it lacked incentives to play beyond flying and shooting. Miyamoto sketched out a fictional universe, but could not decide on a natural hero to convey a sense of an epic space battle. Names under consideration included Star Wolf, Star Sheep, Star Fox, Star Sparrow and Star Hawk.[2]
Now I can think of a number of tales, both modern and folk, featuring anthropomorphic foxes, wolves or birds-of-prey as protagonists. I can’t really think of many featuring sheep.

So what if Nintendo decided to make a video game about a mercenary sheep spacefighter-pilot? What would be the impact on popular culture? Would the game even gain the popularity of the OTL one?

That would be so lame. Really you can imagine a fox, but a sheep... That has the potential to become one of hte main points of Sega to rally around.

Nintendo just might be able to pull it off. Look at Conker's Bad Fur Day.
Maybe.. maybe if they didn't take it seriously, like in Conker. But that would subsequently mean they probably decide to turn Slippy into that annoying creature of Assault.

Still; why would they ever do that? A fox is really an indefinitely better animal for such a game than a sheep. The Japanese are intelligent people; the developers must've realized that.
