Pop Culture Plausibility Check: Disney sold to Berry Gordy

I thought I'd run a quick plausibility check.

Pop culture TL's of course are pretty common around here. But there is one idea I don't think has ever been used. For some reason, I've lately been pondering what it would've been like if Walt Disney Productions wound up being sold to Berry Gordy, founder of Motown Records...sometime around the early seventies, or perhaps the eighties if more plausible.

Was that ever on the table? Did Gordy ever have the desire to expand into Hollywood in such a direct fashion?

When you aren’t paying attention and thought you said “Barry Goldwater”, well damn that’s a twist when you actually read it. (Off the top of my head I could get Reagan on the board, Goldwater is tougher.)

Disney wasn’t in financial trouble until the second half of the 1970s IIRC and not too bad until the early 1980s. At that point any theoretically rich enough person (/corporation) could step in with a hostile takeover, its tougher finding someone who would gain support from 1 or more of the internal Disney factions though.

Why Gordy?
