A still of Stephen Berkoff as President Jake Featherston in the 1988 mini-series War and Remembrance.

Written by Herman Wouk, Winds of War and War and Remembrance were his second and third books that he had written set during the Second Great War. These two books would feature a mixture of real and fictional characters, all connected to the extended family of Victor "Pug" Henry, a middle-aged US Navy officer and a confidant of Presidents Al Smith and Charles La Follette. Winds of War would be set between January 1941, months before Operation Blackbeard and the eve of Operation Rosebud in November 1942. The second book, War and Remembrance, would be set between the launch and Rosebud to the Confederacy's defeat in July of 1944. Other POV characters in the novel series and later the miniseries were Victor's sons, Byron, a US Army cavalry and later armored recon officer, Warren, a dive bomber pilot from the USS Enterprise until his death during the Second Battle of Bermuda, his wife Rhoda, who increasingly finds herself living alone as the war went on, Arnold Ruggles, a Confederate Army General who was attached the High Command (and a distant relative of Pug), Leslie Stolz, a US Government Employee at the US Embassy in Caracas, Venezuela, who obtained the plans for the Freedomite's Plan for the Population Reduction from a Confederate dissident, and later OSS Operative, among others. Historical characters featured included Presidents Smith, La Follette, and Featherston, Congresswoman Blackford, Admiral Halsey, Generals Morrell and Patton.

The first adaptation, Winds of War, would be produced in the early 1980s and would air in 1983 on ABC, in which Robert Mitchum would play Victor Henry, Tom Vincent as Byron, David Dukes as Leslie Stolz, Edward Purdom as General Ruggles, and Peter Graves as Jake Featherston. After years of filming which costed to a total of $40 Million dollars in 2021 money, shot in various locations such as in the United States, Quebec, and Texas, the first episode would premiere on February 6th, 1983 and would be the most watched miniseries to -date. It would receive mostly good reviews as well bagging in several awards. The sequel, War and Remembrance, would prove to be as expensive as a project and would air in 1988, which several roles to changed out for different actors, notably with Stephen Berkoff playing Jake Featherston, which turned out to be poor decision as Berkoff portrayed a rather cartoonish and stereotypical version of Featherston, which in turn had hurt War and Remembrance's ratings.

My take on TL 191 Star Wars..

In the TL 191verse, it is called Galactic Wars or something similar and, seeing how it's being made in a US that is more authoritarian than our own, is going to be less about the fighting of an evil empire by plucky resistance fighters, but a fight against insurgents in the name of order. So yeah, same idea as suggested above.

Before the events of the first movie, several planets in the far outer rim, for varying reasons, broke away from the distant core worlds of the republic under the umbrella of the Rim Liberation Front. Initially just a band of insurgents, whom many in the republic still view them as. The Secession wars lasted 3 years before a ceasefire was called. While the republic continued to stagnate and pull the "everything is fine" card, the Front began to expand into neutral worlds and build up it's military-industrial complex, and by the time of the first movie, after 20 years of ceasefire, the Front has become a military empire of it's own, with a massive fleet, an elite army, and control over thousands of worlds. While they may claim to fight for freedom from tyranny, they aren't much better themselves.

They've become an autocracy that persecutes aliens, seeing them as corrupting influences on humanity, with the mixing of the two causing decadence. They also have a nasty record with people who resist liberation. The irony being that, as of the present, the Republic has evolved into something closer to what the Front had in mind when it broke away, while the Front at this point is more or less a vehicle for it's leaders to gain power for themselves. Basically, they're a mishmash of the Confederacy (mainly the freedomites), the caricatures of the various resistance movements in Canada and the former confederacy, and the Empire of Japan. Also, they have German accents, in reference to how the Empire had alot of Brits in the officers uniforms, in this version the Front has alot of germanic and central-eastern european sounding accents, I guess the further you get from the core, the more Ruritanian your accent sounds?

In the events of the first film, much of the plot is the same, but the Death Star destroying Alderaan isn't Tarkin trying to make an example, rather it is him demonstrating to the Republic how dangerous the Front really is by destroying one of the Republic's most pristine worlds, with Luke Starkiller being recruited to destroy the death star at the end of the fourth episode. As for the characters, Luke is still a farmboy from Tatooine, Leia is still a princess, and Han is still a bit of a rogue. As for the Jedi, I don't know how much eastern influence would come for them in TL-191, but I'm gonna assume it would remain the same when it comes to the Jedi and Sith. Palpatine isn't called Emperor in this world, and he plays up the nice guy act alot more than his original counterpart, and his rhetoric is still based on liberation of the Republic, but make no mistake, he's really not much different from the Palpatine we all know. The only real difference between him and his canon counterpart is his rhetoric.

Anyhow, that's my take on the setting of Star Wars as of the OT in TL 191.

The Return Of Godzilla
iu-124.jpeg

Released: 1984

Director: Jared Carpenter
Produced by: Stevie Spielberg
Screenplay by: Griffin Lucas
Screentime: A whopping 4 hours and 31 minutes
Synopis: A reboot/sequel to the original Godzilla movie by the brilliant Ray Harryhausen, The Return Of Godzilla returns the titular character Godzilla back to the big screen after nearly ten years of rest. Three creative minds who childhoods were influenced by the early sixties Godzilla films, Lucas, Spielberg, and Carpenter went to the Harryhausen Institute with a script Lucas had written. Wanting to take advantage of the advance of Superbomb weaponry, the script seek to return to the dark roots of the first Godzilla and to reflect the geopolitical tensions happening between the European, American, and Asian Continents. Intrigued by the script the three men managed to create and enjoying the story they wrote out, the men were given the green light. Given the budget of a whopping 70 million dollars to fund the film, the trio went to work. Many big list actors were recruited to the film, including some foreign actors to reflect the grave international threat Godzilla was. Most famous of the bunch were Kenny Russell, Albert Schwarzenegger, Lee Jun-fan, Sylvester Stallone, Alexandra Weaver, Datuk Fang Shilong, Karrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, and Mark Hamill. The special effects team was the legendary Jim Henson's Creature Shop who created the legendary 84 suit, and Industrial Light and Magic handling the special effects and miniatures. The movie set was finally settled in Dakota to take advantage of the open plains of it to help create as large of a miniature set as possible. To play the titular creature Kevin Peter Hall was selected, where his large size would really sell on how gigantic Godzilla was going to be in the film. With everything set, filming commenced.

Synopis: On a fishing trip in the Pacific Ocean, the fishing vessel Lucky Jane captain, played by Harrison Ford, is stuck in a is caught in strong currents off the shores of Daikoku Island. As the boat drifts into shore, the island begins to erupt, and a giant monster lifts itself out of the volcano. A few days later, New York reporter Dang Zhiyuan, played by Lee Jun-fan, is sailing in the area and finds the vessel intact but deserted. As he explores the vessel, he finds all the crew dead except for Hiroshi Okumura, who has been badly wounded. Suddenly a giant Shockirus sea louse attacks him but he is saved by Okumura. In New York, Zhiyuan realizes by looking at pictures that the monster he saw was a new Godzilla, larger than the first Godzilla by a whopping fifty meters. Sarah, played by Carrie Fisher, writes an article about the account, but the news of Godzilla's return is kept secret and his article is withheld. Sarah visits Professor Thurgood Elson, played by the late Paul Hubschmid, who experienced the 1954 Godzilla attack and the 1953 Rhedosaur attack. Elson describes Godzilla as a living, invincible nuclear weapon able to cause mass destruction. A German submarine is destroyed in the Pacific. The Germans believe the attack was perpetrated by the Japanese and a diplomatic crisis ensues, which threatens to escalate into nuclear war. The Americans intervene and reveal that Godzilla was behind the attacks. Taking the issue serious, the nations around the world make preparations for the inevitable attack by Godzilla. A few days he strikes the heart of Tokyo where the military was powerless to stop him before returning back to sea and making is way toward the European continent and striking coastal cities along his path. A brave Australian pilot by the name of Aaron Zenold, played by Mark Hamill, uses his privately own airplane to keep tabs on the beast location with constant updates on the radio and being supported with refills and repairs on his plane when needed. As Godzilla nears the Mediterranean, The German Empire prepares their forces to defend their allies and fatherland from the beast. New military vehicles are revealed like the laser attack tank in order to stop him, but proved fruitlessly as the European military is obliterated in Godzilla's march from Sicily to Berlin. In a act of desperation, a Superbomb is deployed in the open fields before Berlin in a vain attempt of stopping Godzilla. Not only does it rejuvenate the beast, it gave it the needed energy of the day to completely turn Berlin into a field of molten slag and fire before making his way to the English Channel. Seeing the trajectory toward Philadelphia, the new Super X is unveiled, a group project between Superpowers to design a machine that will be able to threaten Godzilla. Hans Zimmer( Albert Schwarzenegger), Duke Buffalo (Sylvester Stallone), and Eiji Tsuburaya (Datuk Fang Shilong) are the finest pilots selected for the program. General Big Boss (Kenny Russell) will do everything to make sure the beast is unsuccessful in his rampage and is killed. Will the nations around the world be able too top Godzilla, or will Godzilla be able to carry out his revenge?

After ten months of filming, shooting was rapped up, went through the editing processed, and released to the world public on November 1, 1984. During the movie's entire production cycle, campaigns for the film which was a million dollar endeavor was sent across the entire globe to hype up the film. The most memorable ad back was planet earth with a footprint on it, the large looming shadow overlooking a crowd of feeling people, or him overlooking the city. Foreign posters made the same attempts in poster quality, like the European poster with the city of Berlin on fire as a large shadow hangs over the Kaiser palace. The Japanese poster was the most interesting, showing the mighty Yamato Battleship sucked to the bottom of the ocean with large deep claw marks on the hull with the subtitle, when translated into English, said "No battleship is powerful enough to stop him." Brand deals were made with many companies to help promote the film, with Doctor Pepper being the most notorious of Godzilla, portrayed by a rather terrible suit, destroying the city before stopping his rampage when finding a Dr. Pepper can to drink. Despite some odd commercials and ads for the film, the sheer power of the cast and the good campaigning played well for the film. The film opened to a strong start, making a amazing 20 million dollar return on the first day, and after its four week run managed to gather a whopping $425 million dollars at the end. Critics and fans praised the film for the story and symbolism of the film, especially Godzilla who represented on how the potential coming Nuclear War will cause a apocalypse that will consume everyone in the wrath and the unexpected ending, Spoilers: Godzilla wins at the end and retreats back into the ocean with one finally roar as Philadelphia burns and the downed Super X Crew watch on. With the immense success of the film, a sequel has been green light, and many forms of books and comic books have been made to fill in the time for now while the next film is being worked out.

Note: I'm opened to any sort of opinions and criticisms. yes I know that Godzilla might have butterflied away maybe, but you know what screw it. I wanted to do this anyway so here you go folks.

The Days of Blood and Smoke
apocalypse_now_final_cut.jpg

Alan Hanmore's 1995 disturbingly surreal masterpiece The Days of Blood and Smoke chronicles the story of a band of german soldiers in the late 1960s portion of the anti-colonial African Wars and there slow descent into madness and senseless brutality.

Despite the film's wide acclaim in the United States and Japanese Empire, the film would become infamously controversial amongst certain conservative circles in Germany with it's incredibly harsh depiction of the Kaisereich's incredibly bloody, some even would say near Freedomite, colonialism.

Apologies if this is too current, but I wonder if Imperial Japan would have it's own version of the Social Credit meme.

Wait Filipinos, Koreans and Chinese are HUMAN BEINGS
-12,000,000 Social Japanese point for You, YOU ARE PERMANENTLY BANNED AT JAPAN AND HER TERRITORY YOU AMERICAN SHILL!!!

So two thoughts here:
1. Do you think the War of 1812 would be more well known in TL 191 than OTL? Considering the increased emnity between the US and Canada/Britain, I'd assume the War of 1812 would be noted more as one of the earlier conflicts between the US and British Empire, maybe even getting a new name.

2. A musing on Japanese animation in TL 191. I watched a few Japanese propaganda cartoons from the 1930s and two things were noted by me: There seemed to be clear inspiration from Fleischer studio's work as well as a very similar animation style to what the Soviets were using at the same time. So assuming that Anime isn't created (1) I think that Japanese animation would probably be somewhat similar to cartoons like this, and assuming Japan remains militaristic for a few more decades, the themes may even be somewhat similar.

Assuming Japan opens up eventually, let's say in the 80s or so (my headcanon is that they calm down eventually, but still remain an authoritarian empire, just not as psychotic), then western influences may start to peak into Japanese animation, maybe leading to something somewhat like anime, although with very different themes presumably (idk, I don't watch anime much). Really, I think that "Squirrel and Hedgehog" is a good example of how I think Imperial Japan's animated shows targetting youths would be like in TL 191.

3. Would Germany develop an animation industry of it's own? I know that the Nazis made a few propaganda cartoons during the war (some of them were really fuckin weird) but what of the Kaiserreich? And since people seem to view it as the Japan analog, what of British animation?

(1) Iirc, Anime was highly influenced by the US, and assuming Imperial Japan remains...well, imperial for a longer time (possibly even to the present day) I don't see Anime coming into shape, at least not as we know it),
