Pictures of characters from the Japanese cartoon Squirrel and Hedgehog at a daycare in Japanese Korea [1], ca. early 1980s.
Squirrel and Hedgehog was created in 1977 [2] as a propaganda cartoon made by the Japanese government. It was distributed in Japanese Korea, a place that saw minor fighting at the time of its release, to make the children loyal to Japanese rule. It became notorious for its violence, and themes of war. Production for it became sparsely active throughout the mid-1980s, as rebel activity in Korea intensified. In the 1990s, production for it stopped as Korea became fully independent along with the rest of Japan's overseas territories.
