Pop Culture and Entertainment in a No WW1 World Discussion

No world war 1 for whatever reason. The century is more “peaceful”. Just a general topic about the things above. For the sake of discussion one rule is technology is about the same as otl. 5 to 10 years differences at most. You can use any pod from 1914 and after that you see best fit for this but everything until the assassination is the same.

The only other rule is if you think a major war of some type is bound to happen it must be later in otl and be restricted to Europe. No UK or US war with any major European power which is doable. Any Balkan Wars or smaller scale and regional wars are fine. Same goes for civil wars and revolutions. Germany, Russia, France, Austria, Ottomans, and Italy being involved in a conflict even all together is fine. Just nothing global or on the scale of ww1 or 2. A bloody but quick war is even fine if it last like two years or so and is mostly kept to Europe.

Just post some of your pop culture ideas or thoughts on this.

America will still end up with the most cultural projection of any country, although not to the extent of OTL, and combined with British/Commonwealth presence, English will still end up being the de facto language of business, albeit in competition with German. Otherwise, I think we'll see a weird combination of earlier economic globalization (because no Cold War meaning global capitalism is in a stronger position) and less political globalization (since a lot of the relevant international organization were established because of WWII/Cold War). So USA, Britain, France, Germany, and Japan at least are all likely to have strong film/entertainment industries that probably get a lot of international audiences.

The two strongest film industries will be that of the United States and Germany.

I guess that I am most interested about the corporate implications of this scenario. How does it impact the early studio system in Hollywood?

Something that I have not seen discussed in any detail is what a world where the various European powers (in addition the United States and Japan) stick to building and maintaining their empires and generally avoid direct conflict with one another will mean for the development of telecommunication technology. Should we see faster or slower development and widespread adoption of radio, television, and eventually wireless and digital media?

back in the early 2000s on SHWI one of the big names on there argued that the only reason TV wasn't a big thing in the 30s was the depression, so given differing times for recessions expect earlier tv

Could tv and media in much of the US be less censored and regulated? No red scare and a more conservative Europe could mean a more liberal America.

Without no communist or fascist would the big bad guy in American films be aristocrats or a stereotypical Europe tyrant? Tsar, Kaiser, and even king of Britain. The US could be much more Germanic then otl. The Germans there would know English but likely be bilingual. Germans immigrants were often middle class and educated. Also had there own good schools before ww1. German would still be a more international and major language in science. If English is language of trade and business German still might dominate the field of science. German culture might be much more present in the US but unique.

Most of these Germans are liberal And who descendants left Europe because of regimes like Kaiserreich. What if they become the ones to mock Kaiser the most. Like some Americans would make fun of the queen of England. American media spreads in Germany much faster then otl due to much of it being in German.

Walt Disney working with the Kaiser to make kids cartoons in German. He makes his Disney movies in German and English. He has a German background and a lot of his movies are German fairytales. You can’t tell me that would not do great in Germany especially with it doing well much earlier? They would ban some films those.

Some American Germans make movies that depict Kaiser as incompetent, loud mouth, and ignorant fool. It’s played by Charlie Chaplin. It’s call The Kaiser. He agrees to even do a retake in German maybe. A aging Wilhelm gets pissed and tries to ban it.

Film and media are left more to state levels in the US due to the more liberal nature of it then otl. Liberal in the classical sense. The south still bans stuff sometimes more then Europe or censors it. Same goes for more conservative state too.

Europeans coming to US still might happen after things get better there. It could be more preference. They would be a bit different. Maybe more artists, writers, musicians, and actors go back and for across the Atlantic now. Some even still stay in US due to more creative freedom then Europe.

Immigrant and mobster movie genre take off in the 30s. Hollywood codes of otl fail to be put in place due to accused “papalist” influences. These lead to some controversial movies that get ban in much of the Catholic world and cause complaints among Catholics in US.

The German film industry in Berlin is the second biggest but more clean cut one to the US.

Oktoberfest becomes like St. Patrick Day to the German Americans and to people in the US(a free holiday or excuse to eat and drink).
