Pop-culture AHC: Less to No backlash against Robotech nostalgia

Robotech was a major "founding father" of anime in the 80s, and is even a cult classic today. However, there is a sizable amount of backlash from Macross purists and casual anime fans simply because they "mashed together" three shows, including Macross.

This is ironic considering that Super Sentai fans who hate Power Rangers with a passion "just because it ripped off Sentai" are generally in the minority, or are seen as trolls and stooges. And most Sentai fans do ACCEPT that there is an American carbon copy version of Sentai in another name and quite a few actually like some of the good Power Rangers seasons, and it is also ironic considering that in comparison to crap dubbings today, Robotech's first arc actually kept true to the tone of Macross and was actually a lot darker---everyone commanding the SDF-1 dies at the end except Lisa. It has actually been used by some anti-war "60s era" highschool professors and even some college ones to show people how bad war is(note, this is just a rumor).

NOTE: Admittedly I like Robotech and it allowed me to re-enter anime and be a Gundam addict.

Your challenge, should you accept it is to ensure that Robotech nostalgia does not suffer a lot of backlash, and that the general view/trend of Robotech is POSITIVE in how it shaped anime in America. IMO it could have worked if the Robotech movie wasn't created the way it was, Macek gets rights to DYRL and it's a great hit. Also what could have worked is if he is less heavy-handed with the Macross license, and allows Macross to be exported here.

Just my perspective: As someone who is a) a child of the 1980s and b) not familiar with the anime community, my perception is that Robotech is viewed positively and nostalgically. The problems with Robotech -- again, from my perspective, given the above -- were legal, not artistic; you can read all about how The Sentinels got screwed up on Wikipedia.

Also because Harmony gold are a bunch of IP trolls these days, who are pretty much the sole reason we aren't getting any new Macross stuff outside of Japan these days.

If they weren't IP trolls and had lost that fucking court case in California, no-one would have any problem with them.

Of course if that were true, no-one would have to have threatened them with bodily harm to get Macross Plus released outside Japan either.

I have been an active part of the anime community since the early 90's. I find that there has been no backlash on Robotech but with Harmony Gold. People want Macross and with the way that they have the IP we will not see it. There was a rumor that came out when Macross F was being released that they might have had English sub-titles on the blu-rays, but sadly it was not true. I wish it was true.
