Given his situation, the straightforward approach of "ally tribes, threaten enemy strongpoints, and win battles" was probably if not the best, one of the best options. Sometimes straightforward is good. "I outnumber him, he can't move me, I have all the food, so I can sit" is really basic too and sometimes what the situation calls for.
 
What would happen to Roman politics, 48 to 44 BC, if Pompey were alive, having been extradited to Caesar and pardoned by him? Would Pompey be in on a plot against Caesar, or would he be uninformed like Cicero?

I've never really got the impression that Pompey really seemed to aspire to level of power that the Caesars or Antony did. Had Caesar pardoned him I think Pompey would have been relatively satisfied leading an army somewhere far away or spending the rest of his life in quite luxury like Lepidus did and they had intended for Cicero to do.
