Pompey the even greater

Just before his eastern campaigns finishes Pompey decides to take war to the Parthians. He gathers as many men as he could and sets out for the Parthian empire. And against all odds he beats the Parthians in battle after battle breaking there military power for a generation. In the end the Parthians are forced to surrender to Rome there territory west of the zargos. Pompey then organizes the new Roman territory as provinces and client kingdoms. To top off his conquest of the east he takes the remnants of Ptolemaic empire and makes it into a Roman provience.

Would pompeys actions count as illegal warfare in the eyes of the senate? If it's what would Pompey and the senate do. If it isn't how powerful is Pompey now? How would Crassus handle the fact he got robbed of all the good eastern conquest by Pompey? Now that Pompey is in the east longer what would Caesar do without his support? Can anyone top pompey as first man in Rome? With more power can Pompey get his eastern settlement and land for his veterans passed by the senate alone?

I'm really interested in the aftermath of a scenario like this. Like what would the Parthians do with loseing so much wealth and military might. Would they get conquered or would they look east? so anyone interested?

No replies? Though, this is an interesting question!

However, I doubt that Pompeius Magnus could achieve this. Remember Crassus, his enemy, who tried the same and was killed by the Parthians. Remember the Seleucids, who where defeated by the Parthians and lost Iran and Mesopotamia to them. Remember Trajan, who conquered Mesopotamia (and nothing more!), without have the ressources to hold it (anyway, Hadrian gave the eastern provinces up because he thought they were to expensive to defend).

And now you are asking if Pompeius can additionally invade Egypt? You shouldn't mix up Alexandros o megas and Pompeius Magnus! The first one was a military genius, the second a great general; but Pompey was no match for Alexander. Alexander attacked a weakened Persian Empire with an Emperor reacting very slowly to the Macedonian threat. Pompeius would have to attack a strong and united Parthian Empire, with an army not suitable for the task.

Pompey needs a good battle field, where the Romans can use their infantry, while the Parthians can't make use of their light cavalry.

Added to this, Caesar, being Caesar, would probably have Pompey offed somehow for getting uppity. Of course, he'll publicly weep bitter tears at the loss of his great friend ("alas, poor Pompey! I knew him Brutus....")

Crassus wasn't as good a general as him and Selcuids were declineing when the Parthians happened. Also eygpt is incompletely led during pompeys eastern campaign and I had him lose not too many men in the east. And let's have Pompey do everything he can like your suggestion not to lose and it works.

You know this is before the rise of Caesar right? Also they weren't friends yet

Scenario 2: Pompey is sent east after Crassus disaster of a campaign and conquers Mesopotamia as vengeance for the loss. He also conquers eygpt because ptolomey was late on his bribe payment. This happens before he has a chance to remarry. How does this affect his realationship with Caesar now that Caesar can for now not have a chance to be romes number one man? Does the civil war happen?

Scenario 3: same as 1 but Pompey cross the zargos to loot the rest of the Parthian empire. He's not there to conquer just loot. Could this deastroy the Parthian empire?
