Italy is for me one of the most interesting regions in the world. Hence why I was thinking about starting a timeline in that region. But... I am clueless with which one I should start with. That is where I need your help. You may choose for this poor soul :/

I wanna do all (And maybe do every one of them) but I need to start with something.

Most votes win.

Arab Italy had better win (^: There was this fun little TL on an Ottoman Italy a while back but it died after bout five chapters...

I was thinking about an second Ottoman state formed in Italy as well. With Mehmed II succeeding to conquer Southern Italy. Mehmed dies 10 years later and Cem would flee to Italy to form his own state. But I am busy with 2 Ottoman TL already (not published yet) that I think it would be too much Ottoman TL's.

Must confess: picked Papal Italy because of the start date: 1480 is close enough to Martin Luthur's thesis posting to make the Pope's response to it in an alt TL interesting.

To be honest, I chose the year 1480 due to Mehmed II invasion and the possibilities of it (can't say much now). But the reformation would be interesting as well. Maybe Catholicism might survive. Maybe anything outside Italy and Iberia is lost for the Church. We'll see.

To me, a centralized Italian state would be the more interesting POD. I would also like to see a Moorish Italy, but in an Islamic Europe TL. Papal Italy would be the entire Italian Peninsula ruled by the Pope? Also, no Greek Ortodox refugees would be allowed to stay in Catholic Italy if they came to rule.

To me, a surviving WRE would also be pretty interesting. Imagine if the italian peninsula had never become a stomping ground for the Allemanni, then the Ostrogoths, then the Lombards, then the Franks and Byzantines, then the Arabs, then the Holy Roman Empire, then the Normans, then the...
Top that with a survival of the roman road and urban system, and tech could end up advancing faster.

I liked the idea of a centralised Italy as well. A rival to the HRE, France, Ummayad Caliphate and even the East Roman Empire. I always go for it in CK2 :p

Papal Italy would actually for me start out with an Ottoman conquest of the Kingdom of Naples. Mehmed II lives a bit longer but dies only to make Bayezid and Cem fight for the throne and open Southern Italy to Papal reconquest. And afterwards I would see how things would go.

Byzantine Italy would start out after Basil II succesful conquest of Southern Italy. Later, a ruler flees after losing power in Constantinople for Taranto to start his new Kingdom. Due to small amount of Greek Orthodox population in Italy the new ruler needs support of other people (Muslim Berbers, Catholic Normans). A multinational state under a Greek Orthodox King.

Kinda sad how it went down. With a central power in Italy a lot would be spared. The cities would remain important or become important before the 10th century with the rise of the city states. An earlier renaissance would be even possible without warfare destroying the enlighted Christian European part.

Much more interesting is, will the pope become important as well with a central imperial authority in Italy?

1. Arabic/Moorish Italy
2. West Roman Empire
3. Papal Italy

A few days more and the poll will close. As far as I know, one of the 3 will win. The other options have almost no chance.
