hey, all. im looking into what politics could be like in the United States of North America in my ATL. what i think i mainly need to establish is who the different presidents are over the course of the concerning timeline, what the dominant parties are (though i imagine it would still mostly be democratic and republican, with maybe a major third party) and which direction states would swing.
this is where it gets a bit tricky. see, there's alot more states in the USNA through various means. ive attached a map of the USNA itself as it is in 2000 (the last state to be ratified being nunavut) to show the makeup of the country. PLEASE dont question or debate how the USNA gets this big in the thread--i know its ASB and im NOT changing it--because i want to discuss the politics of this country in the direction of it being as plausible as possible
i actually have to leave soon, so ill just say this: there are 64 states in the USNA. there's the 50 from OTL (with a few border changes; you can attribute that to butterflies) plus fourteen more:
- Baja California
- Sonora
- Chihuahua
- Puerto Rico
- Mariana (consisting of the Northern Marianas and Guam)
- Philippines
- Hudson
- Manitoba
- Saskatchewan
- Alberta
- Cascadia (British Columbia)
- Nunavut
- Keewatin (Northwest Territories)
- Yukon
i figured the borders of canada wouldnt change that much (that territory was acquired before most of the divisions IOTL were made)
id say that the major place where the political history of the USNA ITTL diverges from OTL is when there is no alliance system in the 1910s, so no WW1. the presidential election divergences start after Teddy Roosevelt is re-elected. could he be elected to a third term? i cant remember right now and dont have the time to look it up, but if wilson is elected at all, could he be re-elected with no WW1?
EDIT: okay, now that i have more time, im able to tie up some of the loose ends from earlier. here's some important historical details to consider for this ATL. please ignore the fact that its ASB:
-- the United States is allied to Mexico to the south and to the British Empire ITTL (the british hold parts of canada as seen in the map)
-- the US is not friendly towards the Spanish Empire: Mexico did not gain independence when it did IOTL, and the Mexican-American War is instead the First Spanish-American War. the Second Spanish-American War takes the place of the one from OTL and resulted in the cession of the philippines and puerto rico, but poor decisions by the top brass prevented the americans from annexing cuba (which is a formal province of spain). there's also a Third Spanish-American War from 1941 to 1945 (or possibly '47, depending on whether or not FDR has a third term and dies in office like OTL).
-- the US is friendly to Japan and does not go to war with them; in fact, they
help japan in its invasions of eastern asia until the spanish attack them in '41
-- most of the territory shown here was acquired by historical events: the war of 1812 went completely south for britain so they ended up ceded most of canada to the americans (the specifics are actually more elaborate, but thats the gist of it); Texas and the other OTL mexican territories were won from Spain during the US's first war with them, and the philippines and puerto rico from the second. the acquisition and ratification of guam and the marianas has to do with their support of japan in the 30s
-- the civil war went as it did IOTL; no other states had been ratified at the time than IOTL, so theres virtually no difference.
-- the civil rights movement is also pretty much the same as IOTL, at least as far as i can tell thus far. what would be the actual effects of having many more native americans in the states through canada and a few other ethnic groups because of the philippines?
i feel theres some other stuff that im missing from this, but i cant think of what it as at the moment. ill bring it up if it comes to me. discussion and assistance here may jog my memory, so any of that will be MUCH appreciated
