Polish House of Oldenburg

Louis XIV originally supported Prince Jorgen of Denmark (better known to us as Prince George, Duke of Cumberland, the consort of Queen Anne) for the elections as king of Poland. George refused since he didn't want to change his religion.

What if George has no such qualms about his religion, and is elected as king of Poland? His father had turned the Danish elective monarchy into a hereditary monarchy, so might we see a lasting cadet house of Oldenburg in Warsaw?

What would the effects be in European politics?

NOTE: IDK if George was actually as dull as every one of his contemporaries makes him out to be, but let's give him a few extra braincells (maybe make him a Charles II of England type ruler - cunning and shrewd)

OK this whole idea is pretty unlikely. First off,WHEN did Louis XIV offer to do this? Before or after his marriage to Anne? Because if its after then his kids will be the heirs to Britain eventually. Second, you vastly overestimate what a King of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was capable of. The Crown had little to no army, especially when compared to the forces at the disposal of the great magnates. None of the Polish Nobility WANTED the throne to be hereditary, especially not to a foreigner. Plus NONE of his descendents would have a claim to Poland, as it was elective. Third, George was very dull, you can't really change his personality. He wouldn't be a Charles II style ruler unless you change his entire being.

1674. About 9 years before his marriage so no problem there.Of course this would butterfly away the marriage to Ann.

But he would never have had the capability, nice chap but as Charles said, drunk or sober there was nothing in him.

Funny thing - Jørgen/George didn't mind marrying into a catholic family but then he got close to the British throne. :p
Personally he was a couragous soldier loyal and with a sense of humor.

Christian 4 had been very adverse to the Polish papist's so that may have influenced his choice.

Guess it will be difficult to get Jørgen/George to ascend on the Polish throne.

Just like in Denmark, the Habsburgs managed to turn two elective monarchies into hereditary ones. Both Bohemia and Hungary might be a better analogy to Poland-Lithuania. Still unlike the Danish, Bohemian and Hungarian example George lacks a strong personal powerbase.

There also were differences between Bohemia and Hungary. Bohemia became hereditary after the Habsburgs defeated the rebellion during the 30 years' war, which resulted in strengthened position of the monarch.
Hungary was somewhat different, there it was offered after the Habsburgs had liberated them from the Ottomans, the result there was more like a negotiated settlement.

Still IMHO George would have lacked the resources to be able to do so. In terms of means the house of Wettin would have been in better position to achieve this.
