Game Freak, the creators of Pokemon, actually had a very strong relationship with Sega in the past before becoming second party to Nintendo. They made Pulseman for the Genesis and Sega still owns the IP rights to the game.
It isn't out of the question that Sega might keep the relationship and publish Game Freak's title on their handheld (which was on death's door in 1996 but still alive).
Would Pokemon have still become a success? How would Sega fare with that franchise under its belt instead of Nintendo?
