What are some ways things could have been different with the planter class in the American south. Specifically what changes could result in the complete destruction of that class and the erasure of any sort of positive legacy it enjoys.

They were destroyed by the civil war, so your question is kinda redundant. Probably better to ask for the Caribbean.

The planter class managed to successfully portray themselves as martyrs of the Lost Cause. In their minds, they viewed themselves as defenders of savior-faire and gentility brought low by ignorant barbarians from the north.

I'm not sure how you unseat that myth.

It's not that hard to imagine. The lost cause enjoyed and enjoys currency because of the idea that there had to be reconciliation on equal terms. Have political will in the north not fail civil rights and historical memory in the 1870s.

A Radical President arranges large scale proscutions with the alterntives, expropriation and exile or trial for treason, they had made war against the United States

At the same time the North promotes the idea that this class started the war for its own interests and that decent white southerners were lied to.

Oh and use the land to compensation former slaves and give them an economic base
