PODs and Candidates for an American Monarchy

A question that has been asked many times before here: how do you end up with a USA or equivalent being a monarchy rather than a republic? How far back do you need to change events, and who are the candidates?

The requirement here is for a hereditary monarchy rather than an elective one, so a candidate is needed who is likely to have children in this timeline.

The constitutional set up can, and presumably, needs to, be different (for instance, maybe each state could effectively be an independent, sovereign country, but in personal union with all the others by sharing the same head of state). The monarch can either have some political power or be a constrained constitutional monarch - I'm assuming that the latter is more likely, or at least more sustainable.

  • Numerous possible PODs and candidates pre-revolution
    • the current British monarch, or any cadet branch of the British royal family would be the easiest
  • If General Gates successfully replaced General Washington in the Conway Cabal, he could have been offered the kingship
  • The Prussian scheme advocated Prince Henry of Prussia as king, easy POD would be more Prussian involvement in the revolution
  • Both the Newburg Conspiracy and Newburg Letter want King George Washington, a worse Shays' Rebellion seems the most likely to me
  • John Adam's proposal at the constitutional convention could easily be described as an elective monarchy, that can easily turn hereditary with the right person
  • Both General Hooker and General McClellan were accused of favoring a "dictatorship", a worse Civil War and who knows what could happen... (you'll have to get Hooker some military victories though to use him)
  • The Business Plot was more fascist than monarchical but the right POD can do wonders, they advocated for General Smedley Butler

  • A popular ideas on the board is to make General Lafayette or Bonnie Prince Charlie, king I find these two highly unlikely as they are both Catholic, and the US barely was able tolerate a Catholic president in the 1960.

  • A pet idea of mine is if the conflict between Federalists and Democratic-Republicans escalated to violence/civil war, we could have seen Andrew Jackson pull a "Napoleon"

  • And as always there is Emperor Norton I :openedeyewink:

An interesting option would be to have some relation of the King - perhaps Prince William Henry - be fairly rebellious/Tory in temperament and openly pro-rebel in the public eye. Maybe even a few trips to the Colonies including, to the embarrassment of the crown, a secret meeting or two with members of the Continental Congress. He could be a good fit

Or you could go far more contemporary and have people be annoyed enough with the government that Prince Harry and his new bride get invited (back) over!

I came up with a pretty out-there idea a while ago where Hawai'i accepts US annexation in the late 1880s/early 1890s, but only if Lili'uokalani is allowed to become Queen of "The United Kingdoms of America and Hawai'i" or something and Congress is just like "gotta have them pineapples" and just goes with it.

It's incredibly unrealistic, but I like the idea.
