POD(s) for an East-West German confrontation in the 70s

I'm thinking about making a TL about an East-West German confrontation in 1970 without any intervention from NATO and the Warsaw Pact. Does anyone have a POD for this or is this just outright impossible?

Nope. ASB.

Or it might be short enough that it cools dawn before big boys show up....

So small border clash well away from USA/ Russian units. Old coms system could delay info up on both sides. So I give it few hours and then it is ended up by hot line / red phone. Both Moscow and DC sends message hold shooting by X hours everyone back to their positions.

Fun situation is if West was winning for hours and Entire east German city defected to west. But few hours before West German city was occupied by East Germans.

So we get small propaganda victory for West. Short yet bit of rough occupation of West city. And defection of small town to west...

If you look on a map that shows where the positions of the Soviets, East Germans, West Germans, BAOR, and the Americans, you can see just how impossible this is.

What about an eventual intervention from both sides? Like the BAOR are fired upon and the UK intervenes and soon the confrontation escalates into a NATO-Warsaw Pact confrontation.

This is the main problem I'm facing. I can't see a confrontation with the two Germanies after I saw the position of NATO and Warsaw Pact forces.

There is still the Option of a confrontation between the paramilitary border polices of the two German states.

That happened on a very low basis. The Bundesgrenzschutz sometimes shooted back, if someone was trying to escape. Perhaps this could escalte into something?

Otherwise I agree with the other posters. Nearly ASB without NATO or Warsaw pact participation.

Since the RAF was partially financed and supported by the GDR, perhaps the BND decides to do the same. Which would be a "bit" uncharacteristic and would probably fail.

Well, the POD I think of is different positioning of forces, for example make an area where there are West German forces directly next to East German forces chuck in a lost Squad or two due to map error and you could have a small confrontation

I was wondering what you were talking about until I realised that RAF stands for "Rote Armee Fraktion".

And no, it wouldn't work. The Stasi would have a comprehensive members list in a week, tops.
