PNG with KIAP-style apartheid in the South Pacific

A little-known fact mentioned in Lonely Planet guides on the South Pacific is that there actually are a few white European PNG citizens who're descended from Australian administrators or European missionaries who decided to stay on after PNG independence in 1975. Now, WI there had been more such kiaps stay on- could there in any way have developed an apartheid-style system in the South Pacific a la Sth Afr or Rhodesia ? How would Australia & surrounding Pacific Island nations have reacted ?

Well Australia wasn't far off Apartheid in it's own right at the time.

Australia still had a certain way to go in terms of racial and multi-cultural relations, but it was no where near anything like Apartheid. So unless you live in some sort of fantasy world, thats pretty much a false statement.

Forced resettlement, children forcibly taken from their aboriginal parents, attempts at segregation, lack of political representation, not exactly a picture of equality.

That was winding down in the 70s, and was perpetrated by the majority on the minority. Aparthied is perpetrated by the minority on the majority and was well and truly discredited by 1975.

Only because there was less whites in South Africa than blacks, it was wholly about race not majority.

Aparthied was about whites keeping their power, stripping blacks of their rights etc so the minority could rule. Australia's situation was so imbalanced that it can't even be considered the inverse, 15 million whites and 100,000 aboriginies, so laws relating to aboriginies were more in the nature of afterthoughts not really crucial to the politics of the country. Besides, Aboriginies were given the vote in 1962 and full citizenship in 1967 and the White Australia Policy ended in 1973. PNG didn't become independent until 1975 so presumably an Aparthied regime couldn't come into effect until after then by which time legal racial discrimination had ended, making an aparthied regime in late 70s PNG very contrary to Australian politics and public opinion.

An Apartheid state couldn't exist in PNG for a number of reasons, namely Australia wouldn't tolerate it - it was going entirely against Australia's changing politics at the time. The White Australia died in 1973. If the whites in Papua were gonna try and create an apartheid state and had the numbers to do so, I figure that Australia would have just made PNG a state and allowed it to send people to Canberra.
