PM Enoch Powell

Apart from cumbria's bilious torch song, we don't seem to have very many "PM Enoch Powell" TLs around here. It's sort of like the British version of Nixon in '60; lots of talk, little product.

So, what would a Powell premiership be like? So long as there's no magic, the POD could be whatever you'd like.

I've always wondered what a Powell cabinet would look like.

The Gordon Banks timeline pretty much covered the bases. Anything trying to match up would seem second-rate.

I was having an idea where Michael Benn doesn't die during the war, and succeeds his father in the House of Lords, meaning Tony Benn doesn't campaign for the Peerage Act of 1963 and Alec Douglas-Home can't renounce his peerage as a result, meaning Butler's the only choice to succeed Macmillan. Perhaps, things could go further and Macmillan resorts to favouring Powell for some reason, or alternatively, Butler wins in '64 but a slim majority (Powell could be given quite a high cabinet post as he was a supporter of Butler) and loses in an early election of '66 with Powell winning a leadership election afterwards.

Or, for some reason Powell doesn't make the Rivers of Blood speech and Heath has an accident in '69 on the Morning Cloud during his race to Sydney (they nearly sank in a storm), and Powell takes over.

Both probably completely factually wrong as I usually forget something.

If Gordon Banks had played

England beat Germany in the quarter final of the 1970 World Cup due to Gordon Banks not succumbing to food poisoning. Things get worse and worse from there, as Fletch said anything else would probably seem second rate.

Indeed. Personally the best works by Anthony Wells over at UK Polling Report. There is, however, Thaxted by Sydney Web over at SWHI which does have Powell as PM in the 1960s, though he isn't really the main focus of the story.

Is it actually the same Anthony Wells? Awesome!

This TL is spoiled by the fact that shadowy forces of some kind are at work against Powell there, as evidenced by the murder of the Queen and various other things.

Enoch Powell personnality also did not lend him to easily become PM, as he was poor at networking and building relationships with people.

In order to make him a PM, you need to mellow his personnality and make him more personnable, less of an hermit and someone able to relate with everyone. This needs a POD during his youth, during the war in my opinion.

But the murder of the Queen nearly did get rid of him anyway, not a very smart move by the plotters, unless they also had the ear of King Charles.
