Plunger in the wrong place at the right time

After looking into the wikisite of the subs nearest PH i decided to create this WI.

USS Plunger was off Diamond head during the attack on PH. But lets say the commander had decided to head for another place to conduct a drill and suddenly finds the ship surrounded by the attackfleet. What would he do? Stay submerged or try to warn PH or maybe even do like this "This is the US-fleet submarineforce, what are you guys doing so close to our base?"

You can find a complete OrBat for the USN on 12/7/1941 here:

http://niehorster.orbat.com/013_usa/_41_usn/_usn.html

It gives either distance and bearing from a land reference or longitude and latitude for every ship at sea.

Without knowing anything about the skipper of the USS Plunger (SS179) in particular, I would guess he'd fire off an urgent contact report and try to shadow them until he received further orders. A hotdog skipper might make a very liberal interpretation of the spirt of the orders to engage hostile submarines in the vicinity of the Islands as permission to attack. If so the US will probably have a very embarrassing start to the war as a spread of torpedoes run underneath their targets or fail to explode on impact.
