Plausible alternate Congo

it's one of the biggest cliches, I know. but what are some NON-BELGIAN alternatives for the Congo, that are at least somewhat plausible?

the territory doesn't have to go as one piece, it can be divided up if you want.

plausibility is key, what do you think?

One alternative that's even more plausible than OTL is most of Congo being chewed up by bordering colonial powers, and the Dutch or maybe Spain or Portugal getting Congo itself. Of those, Portugal is the most plausible, IMO.

Britain at one point was willing to support the Portuguese claims over the entire region in exchange for trade concessions on the Congo River. Portugal itself had neglected its claims in the region until everyone started turning up in their back yard so to speak prompting them to "remember and take a harder look at what they actually claimed in the region".
It was there own attempt to exert those claims that prompted in part the Berlin conference. Have everyones attn diverted somewhere else and an Anglo-Portuguese protocol over the region ( interior at the very least) will probably prevail.

At the very least, France would grab some of the northern bits to augment French Central Africa.

Portugal would grab the south, to connect Cabinda with the rest of Angola.

Might Britain and Germany not grab some bits to augment their adjacent African colonies?

IIRC, Egypt had control of a small peice of the Congo at one point...

You've got the order mixed up - Cabinda was divided from Angola as a result of the Berlin Conference. Now, they might take the south to augment what would probably end up being their version of the TAST (Trans-Africa Strip-Thingy), especially if Britain hasn't yet explored Rhodesia.
