Plausibility: Venetian Colony in America

Would it be possible for the Venetian Republic to establish an American colony. If not Venice could any other Italian state do it? And where would be the best location for a thriving Italian colony?

That was mostly tied to the sugar trade. Colonies in the West Indies are a dime a dozen and often not very thought out. Venice has no reason to establish a colony so far from their traditional role. Maybe if they had a better ally to their west they could possibly open up. However I feel there would need to be a good POD before that can happen. Maybe Im wrong but most ideas need a good POD.
