Plausibility: Two Frances

Like in Kaiserreich, where there are two governments that claim to be the true government of France, one based in la Métropole and the other based in Algeria (ideally, though a French government based in Indochina or some other colony is acceptable, just be prepared to get fewer points though). How plausible is this?

The only way I can see this happening is some sort of light Nazi victory scenario, where Vichy France and Free France (in Africa) both claim to be the government of France, or in some sort of scenario where the Soviets reach Paris.

What about, say, following some sort of socialist revolution in France?

I don't see a Republican government retreating to Africa after a Communist/Socialist/Syndcalist. more likely. Britain would just swallow up French colonies and try to limit the influence of a Communist French Regime (which btw, would most likely a CP victory to achieve, leading us to Kaiserreich pretty much) unless Britain goes Socialist too.

Aww. fillerfiller

So the French could'nt pull a KMT and run away to Taiwan, I mean, Algiers with a population from Europe?

possible but very very hard, perhaps let them keep some bits of France proper to prevent Britain from taking all 'free-french' colonies/territories

Thats not Alt reality - Its De Gaulle vs Vichy...

Renaud & most of the cabinet, along with maybe 80 - 120 Deputies of the 500+ in the legislature move the government to Algeria. Most of the senior Army, Navy & AF commanders join them there. Renaud declares 'France' still stands with Britain as a it ally against Germany.

Back in metropolitan France a few hundred of the Deputies, a minority, and former cabinet member or two collaborate with the Germans in forming a true French government in oppositions to Renauds "deserters". The majority of the Deputies and French population are relieved, but remain uncommitted for the moment.

In our history prime minister Renaud did organize removing the French government to Algeria. He and the project fell apart when only bit over 100 Deputies supported the move. The vast majority made it clear they favored a cease fire and end to the catastrophe. At that point about half the cabinet including Petain started pressuring Renaud into asking for a cease fire & armistice terms. Renaud resigned & Petain was approved as the new PM.

And then Hitler gets assassinated between the Fall of France and the invasion of the Soviet Union, and the next government makes peace with Great Britain.

Later or no American or Soviet intervention(but not both, obviously) might lead to a stalemate, with Vichy France being recognized as the legitimate government of France on the condition that Nazi Germany and its puppets stop expanding and exterminating people. The Free French fighters, ld by DeGaulle, flee to Algeria and claim to be the true government of France.
