Plausibility: GOP destroyed during Great Depression?

Lets imagine this: FDR is a little more popular because he doesn't try to go through with his Court Packing Scheme, and the Dems don't lose control to a Conservative Coalition in 1938. FDR is reelected in a massive (or more massive) landslide in 1940. Lets then say eventually the GOP withers away. But GOPers are still very active.

So If you are the Democratic Nominee, then you are going to be elected President, this naturally makes massive fighting between the Conservative South, and former Republicans, and the Liberal New Dealer side of the Party, This system replaces the two Party system for a little while.

So how long before a new Party sproings up?

I'd say the best bet would to be to go back a bit farther and have the Progressives survive, actualy.

Well, the American Libert Union could be the new "opposition party", rallying States' Rights supporters, Big Capital, free marketists and isolationists.

I agree, or at the very least have the progressives make up a bigger part of the Republican party and they go over to Dems under Roosevelt(I know butterflies might have it so he's not President, but I'm just saying that for simplicity's sake, the point is a progressive dem who can forge the electoral coaltion that Roosevelt wanted) Leaving the conservatives of both parties to go from theri own, but they drop the Republican name in order to appease the Southern conservatives.
