Plausibility: European Invasion of Victorious Confederacy?

Suppose the Rebs are able to win in the ACW, albeit not a Military Victory, but merely because the Northern public grew tired of the war, and the Union signed a peace with Davis. The United States isn't in entirely dire straits, but the Confederacy is still much devastated by the war, much of it's resources and man power withered to the bones.

Is is plausible that a European Nation might "intervene" in the Confederacy, and turn it into a protectorate, or even take total control? If so, what would be the effects of such a crisis?

The obvious question is why on earth would it want to?!? Given that the CSA just fought a successful war against the US, trying to invade them would be across the width of the Atlantic would be crazy. And if their not invaded, why would the CSA LET themselves be made into a 'protectorate'?

Could the US invade Argentina at the time? Quite possibly, but why would they want to? Same order of difficulty/implausibility IMO.

Actually rather more difficult: Argentina had about 1.7 million people at the time, the Confederacy was more like 12 million. (Not to mention horrendously more battle-hardened and rather better armed).

Now, if we assume the Confederates have been reading "American Empire" and "Decades of Darkness" and go all Dingo, trying to conquer Central America and Mexico, invading Cuba, trying to establish African colonies and reestablish the slave trade, etc., I can see a European coalition forming to force them to sit down and behave, and invasion (with slave uprisings, what fun) might be involved: but they wouldn't be trying to make a "protectorate" of the place, and the US would undoubtedly get involved.

The closest you can get to this state of affairs would be for the Confederacy to become the junior partner in an alliance with a European power, most likely Britain. If the Confederacy is in as sorry a shape as you suggest in your OP, it would probably end up economically dependent on a foreign power. Such a Confederacy would probably do things like let RN ships refuel and issue diplomatic statements parroting the Foreign Office's statements on global issues. It'd be about as exciting as it sounds.

Frankly, though, unless crazy revanchists come to power in the USA the most likely country to economically puppetize the CSA is none other than the USA itself.
